A frictionfree 8-step potentiometer developed for determining wind directions at Danish climatic stations is described. The potentiometer consists of eight resistances in series, scanned by eight reed contacts. Resistances and contacts are unaffected by moisture and corrosion. The potenfiometer, easily constructed, robust and reliable, can be used with wind direction indicators of various types, for example, mechanically registering.

The principle may also be applied to other fields of servo-mechanism by use of the output from the contacts to activate for example an automatic alarm system.
