A method for the direct determination of the components of interatomic distances in crystals has been developed from a consideration of the properties of the Fourier series whose coefficients are the squares of the J'-coefficients for the crystal reHections. Valuable structural information is thus obtained without'making any assumptions as to the phase to be allotted to the I"coefficients. The practical application of the method is illustrated by a discussion of the structures of potassium dihydrogen phosphate and hexachlorobenzene.' For literature references and notation see W. L.
