## Abstract Base catalysed condensation of a substituted 2‐hydroxyacetophenone with acetic anhydride and sodium acetate followed by cyclization of the intermediate with acid gave substituted 3‐acetyl‐2‐methyl‐4__H__‐1‐benzopyran‐4‐ones. These were then brominated with phenyltrimethylammonium tribro
