✦ Synopsis

Absolute rate constants for the reaction of S(3P) with ethylene were measured over an ethylene concentration range of 7, a total pressure of 50 to 400 tom, and a flash intensity range of 10. At 298"K, the bimolecular rate constant was found to be invariant over this range of variables a& had a measured value of 4.96 X cm3 molec-' s-l. Over the temperature range of 218" to 442"K, the rate data could be fit to a simple Arrhenius equation of the form -1.58 f 0.08 kcal/mole R T k, = (7.13 f 0.74) X 10-12exp Units are cm3 molec-l s-l. tion of the reaction product ethylene episulfide is discussed.

The dependence of the measured value of kl on the concentra-* Acknowledgement is made by this author to the donors of the Petroleum Research Fund, administered by the American Chemical Society, for support of this research.
