✦ Synopsis
The far-k. spectra of films of ionomers based on styrene-acrylic acid copolymers obtained by copolymerization in emulsion in the 8&450 cm-' region have been studied. For each ionomer, an intense and broad absorption band, whose frequency is cation mass dependent has been observed and assigned to cation-motion in the electrostatic field of the anionic carboxylate groups. The force field elements for cations vibrating at carboxylate-containing sites have been obtained for different models of the cation-motion vibration. The results indicate that the postulated models for a vibrating assembly are reasonably good and the electrostatic ion-multipole treatment of the interactions is correct. The results indicate also the presence of cations in several environments in these ionomers and the formation of ionic group aggregates-multiplets and clusters.
