His imaginative construction of a 22nd-century Wessex which has been separated from the mainland by catastrophic earthquakes. Dorchester has become a big tourist centre with mosques and casinos. There are mysterious references to "the Presidential Palace in Riyadh" and "Baltimore in the Western Emirate States". However this all turns out to be a corporate dream, in which members of the Foundation are projected into a future of their own making. Some of the participants get hooked on the lives which their alter-egos are leading in this make-believe future; they refuse to come back . . .
