✦ Synopsis
From their kinetic data, Drs. Brown and LaCroix have inferred that ettingite formation in the system C3A-CaSOn.1/2H20-H20 is diffusion controlled. They have also inferred that ettringite crystals in this system grow unidirectionally. In view of the known needle shapes of ettringite crystals, the last inferrence is a tautology, in the sense that it is not rlcw information. The direct evidence for the unidirectional growth is in their observed relative intensities of x-ray diffraction lines of ettringite. The authors have noted that the observed relative line intensities are significantly different from the JCPDS values. In the following table, the relative line intensities from JCPDS card No. 9-414, those observed by the authors and the Miller (hkl) indices of the lines have been collected.
