✦ Synopsis
The authors have presented an interesting mechanism based on their laboratory studies on the expansion of phyllitic rocks due to alkali-aggregate reaction. In an investigation described below the writer found similar results. In proposing a mechanism of expansion, the authors suggested that it is significantly different from the usual alkali-aggregate reaction mechanism. The writer, however, believes that both the mechanisms are part of a generalized behavior of swelling of solids in water, as proposed earlier in connection with the mechanism of expansion associated with ettringite formation.
