✦ Synopsis

The technique of Differential-Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) has been applied to measure the enthalpies of crystalstructure transformations in the MC104 (M = Na, K, Rb, Cs, and NH4) system. The DSC results are discussed in the light of previous data reported in the literauae on these compounds using other techniques. The measuredtransformation enthalpies are used to calculate relevant thermochemical quantifies pertaining to these transformations. New data showing the variation of heat capacity with temperature are presented for NH4CIO 4 and KCIO 4. It is shown that previous measurements have varying degrees of error either because of the inherent limitations of the measurement techniques or due to improper recognition of the effect of thermal decomposition and/or sublimation of the test samples.
