The observed mortality of a group of individuals often needs t o be compared with that expected from the death rates of the national population, with allowance made for period, age, 8ex and race. This is achieved by the person-years or subject-years method. A different approech is propod which leads to new test statistics and confidence intervals which may be used with small samples.
