The paper describes a diagnostic expert system for weld defects. The system is designed to run on an IBM-PC or compatible computers. It works in the form of a dialogue, and the man-machine interface is user-friendly. The output and input information may be in Chinese and~or English. It is able to aid welding engineers to determine the category to which a weld defect belongs, the reason why it forms, and the precautions that should be taken to prevent it.
