✦ Synopsis

Before sewage sludge can be used on the land, it must satisfy conditions placed on the level of contaminants it contains. The subject of this paper is the choice of a sampling scheme designed to detect unsatisfactory levels of contaminants, while not placing burdensome constraints on those sewage treatment plants producing sewage well within the desired contaminant limits. A variable sampling interval, cumulative sum scheme is described and applied to a particular data set. Only the case of a sewage treatment plant disposing of sludge more or less continuously is considered.
