Ramona Sanders has dreamed about leaving Rust, Montana behind since she was a little girl. She’s kept the idea held tight in the back of her mind, something to look forward to when it seems like there isn’t much else to grasp. She knows that it won’t be easy, Rust is part of her and she is part of it, but she has to have a dream. Rust is unforgiving, full of bullies and few opportunities, and now that her family farm is failing it’s become more dire than ever that she sees what else is out there. She wants a chance to start over in a place that doesn’t know her, where can fit in instead of stand out. For Alec Davis, Rust has always been a place worth forgetting. He never wanted to leave behind his life in Atlanta to live in a sea of wheat and nothingness, but his relentless father gave his family little choice and now here they are. He has always battled with himself, been a prisoner inside of his own mind, and being trapped in middle of nowhere Montana has done little for his mental state. He has his good days and his bad days, but lately the bad days feel like they’re winning out.

When the two are thrust together for an English project, they find that they have more in common than they could have imagined. Can Ramona give up her headstrong tendencies enough to let someone in, and can Alec push aside his own demons and realize that there might be something out there worth staying for after all? Navigating rural life, high school, and possible love isn’t easy and it may just get the best of both of them.
