β¦ Synopsis
Java's ease of programming and safety features help you quickly produce working code." K. Arnold and J. Gosling in Java Programming Language [1] "I was eventually persuaded of the need to design programming notations so as to maximise the number of errors which cannot be made, or if made, can be reliably detected at compile time."
SUMMARY Our experience of using Java is disappointing: as a programming language (irrespective of its implementations and libraries), Java itself leaves much to be desired. This paper discusses a few serious problems with Java's design, which leads us to suggest that the language definition should have been an integral part of the design process rather than, as appears, a retrospective commentary.
