β¦ Synopsis
2 5000 kg cm -2 have been described so far 1.) Uniaxial stress removes the degeneracy of the valence band of silicon, simplifying the c r picture of the holes. The results are shown in the series of spectra shown in Figure 2. For small stresses the hole line is relatively broad and asymmetrical, the main contribution to its width coming from the non-equidistant Landau levels. As the stress increases, the line becomes more symmetrical and its width decreases until 5 000-6 000 kg cm -2 when it reaches a plateau. In the region of the plateau the line width is determined by the hole relaxation time.
The authors thank B. G. Zhurkin and N. A. Penin for acquainting them with the design of the cryostat they used for studying e p r spectra of Si'under uniaxial stress. The authors are also grateful to V. D. Kharitonov and V. P. Yakimenko for their careful construction of the components of the cryostat.
