✦ Synopsis


Bifurcation of axially loaded elastic-plastic beams is discussed. The load is applied instantaneously and remains unaltered during the motion. The effect on stress waves travelling along the beam is taken into account; it allows to cast some more light to the mechanism of plastic buckling. The analysis is limited to the geometrically linear theory. It is assumed that the material has linear strain-hardening.

For solving this problem the quasi-bifurcation theory is applied. The buckling threshold and spectrum of bifurcation times are calculated. A coefficient characterising the exponential growth of buckling modes is introduced. Several numerical examples are given.
