Eighty patients undergoing major abdominal surgery using remifentanilβbased anaesthesia were randomly allocated in a doubleβblind manner to receive an intravenous bolus of fentanyl, buprenorphine, morphine or piritramide 20βmin before the end of surgery. A reduced dose was administered postoperative
