During the past nine years Dr. C. M. Cresson has been employed by the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad and Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Company in making analyses of coals fl'om their numerous collieries. Many of these examinatlous have included complete sections of the whole vein, including the slates; others are of large samples of coals, weighing several hundred pounds each, and taken fl'om the sehutes fl'om which it is about to be shipped to nmrket. I am also in receipt of a letter fl'om Dr. Cresson, intended to be read at. the meeting of the American Institute of Mining Engineers at Pittsburgh, on the same subject,
