โฆ Synopsis
In this note the results of a simultaneous testing of ii slightly reactive Japanese sand types, by the JIS Chemical and Mortar Bar Methods, and the Danish NaCI Bath and Simple Chemical Methods are reported. The results show that the Danish NaCI Bath Method is more severe than the JIS Chemical and Mortar Bar Methods. This is in spite of the fact that in the JIS Mortar Bar Method the alkali content of the cement is raised to 1.2% Na20 equivalent. The results also show that the Simple Chemical Test Method could be performed on Japanese sand types. More work will have to be done before an acceptance criterion for the Simple Chemical Test Method could be estimated for Japanese sand types.

An accelerated test method has been proposed for the detection of potential alkali-aggregate reactivities of aggregates. This consists of making 1:3 sand cement mortar prisms and placing the prisms in a saturated NaCl solution at 50ยฐC. Length change measurement with time reveals the potential alkali

The alkali-sillca reactivity of 35 different sand types have been evaluated by both the "German" and NaCl bath methods. The results show that although there is a general correlation between the results of these two methods, the evaluations of sand by the two methods are not identical. Analyses of th
