Abstract
Using two dimensional immunological electrophoretic techniques, it is possible to study the antigens in microlitre quantities of saliva without prior concentration. Under the conditions used, crossed immunoelectrophoresis was superior to crossed immunoelectrofocusing in that the former revealed a greater heterogeneity of salivary components. Both methods showed that there is considerable variation between individuals in the proportions of the different antigens present. Levels of some of the salivary antigens in a single individual were consistent between samples collected at different times of day. ฮฑโA mylase was the major antigen of parotid saliva while the submandibular/sublingual secretion contained a wider spectrum including a major acidic antigen.
