✦ Synopsis

As shown by BARBER (1949), FAIRBROTHER, PARKER and EATON (1954), BONDI, KORNBLUM and de SAINT PHALLE (1953) and other authors, penicillinase-positive Xtaphylococczcs aureus strains may frequently give rise to penicillinase-negative mutants. BOROWSKI (1963a) found that ability to produce penicillinase was more frequently lost by staphylococci belonging to phage group I and by the strains derived from purulent lesions.

According to the observations of HAMBURGER, WALKER, CLARK and CARLETON (1958) and of BOROWSKI (1964), penicillinase-negative variants may be isolated from tho organs of animals infected with pure cultures of penicillinase-positive staphylococci.

In view of these findings it seemed of interest to compare certain characteristics of penicillinase-negative variants with those of the parent strains.
