The aims of this study were to explore values, and life-role salience differences within occupational groups in different cultures, using Australian and Canadian occupational therapy students as examples; and to examine the effects of compromise choices by exploring differences between those who chose occupational therapy as their first career preference and those who had other first career preferences. Assessment tools included Work Importance Study (WIS) instruments, and a tailored questionnaire, previously used with a national sample of Canadian occupational therapy students to assess their locus of control, work experience, career preference and compromise choices (
