Abstract
A conventional rat‐race coupler has been doubly miniaturized: (i) characteristic impedances and electrical lengths of microstrip sections have been adequately modified as the first step of size reduction and (ii) T‐shaped PBG cells have been implemented to diminish strip section length as the second step of circuit miniaturization. The experimental results show good agreement with theoretical characteristics. Furthermore, the proposed seven‐section PBG coupler enabled the achievement of 85% scale of size reduction in the final design, which proves the attractiveness of presented miniaturization method. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
