✦ Synopsis

A common problem in making measurements at temperatures below 1 K is to prevent heat leaks down signal lines to experiments. DC or low frequency signals can usually be transmitted along very thin wires to avoid excessive thermal conduction. These cannot be used at high frequencies where properly matched transmission lines must be used.

A low-dissipation valve for use at helium temperatures, which uses a polished stainless steel valve head and a PCTFE seat for the sealing surfaces, has been developed and tested. The leak rate with a closing force of 10 kgf and a dierential pressure of 8000 Pa across the valve was experimentally det

We have constructed a goniometer to rotate a sample around two independent axes in the mixing chamber of a dilution refrigerator. Two small computer-controlled stepper motors wound with superconducting wire rotate the sample around the axes with an angular range of 360". The goniometer was designed

A simulated double-effect lithium bromide/water absorption system was investigated. The main energy input was hot water. System optimization is proved to he possible in the light of the results and there is an added economic optimum heat transfer area for each hear exchanger and a glohal minimum cos
