Abstract
In the harmonic approximation of lattice dynamics, a closed formula for transition probabilities, which includes all phonon processes appearing in the treatment given by van Kranendonk, has been derived. This has been done by Fourier transforming the field gradient instead of the usual power series expansion with regard to the nuclear displacements. The formulae for the point‐ion and the overlap potential models are presented in detail. Fürther, the expressions are used to demonstrate the validity of the power series method for the proceeding potentials. A shell model is suggested in order to include the dynamical changes of the ionic wave functions in the calculation of the field gradient.
