An efficient and convenient synthesis of benzo[a]acridines and indeno[1,2βb]benzo[f]quinolines was achieved in high yields by the reaction of Nβarylidenenaphthalenβ2βamine with 1,3βdicarbonyl compounds catalyzed with triethylbenzylammmonium chloride (TEBAC) in aqueous media. The structures were established by spectroscopic data and further confirmed by Xβray analysis. This method provides several advantages such as neutral conditions, high yields and simple workβup procedure. In addition, water was chosen as a green and recyclable solvent.
