✦ Synopsis
The influence of the anisotropic polarizabilities of the neutral molecule on the lifetimes of complexes formed in ionmolecule collisions of Na+ with N2 and CO* were determined using a classical trajectory calculation. Lifetimes are found to be increased substantiaIIy over those calculated for the same systems having isotropic polarbzabilities The fmdings lend further support to the angular momentum coupling model of Ferguson and co-workers proposed to account for factors influencing the vibrational relaxation of ions.
