✦ Synopsis
A new chemotype of Mentha longifolia (L.) Hudson was selected from populations growing wild in the Piedmont Valley (Italy). The oils obtained by steam distillation were analysed using gas chromatography while the components were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The plant was found to possess a high content of piperitenone oxide (77.43%) and moderate amounts of germacrene D (3.7%) and 1,8 cineole (1.61%). The chromosome number (2n = 24) was determined in metaphasic squashes of root tips.
