Let G be one of the simple groups A or PSL q where q is the power of a n n prime r. Let p be a prime number dividing the order of G. It is proved that if G has a p-Steinberg character, then G is isomorphic to a semi-simple group of Lie type in characteristic p.

THEOREM. If dim V F 3, then both K V and K ސ V are rational K Ž . s purely transcendental over K. Similar results hold for a cyclic affine action.
In [A. Turull, J. Algebra 235 (2001), 275-314], we calculated the Schur index of each of the irreducible characters of the finite special linear groups. In the present paper, we calculate the Schur index of all the irreducible characters of some overgroups of the special linear groups. The overgroup
The P61ya cycle indices for the natural actions of the general linear groups and affine groups (on a vector space) and for the projective linear groups (on a projective space) over a finite field are computed. Finally it is demonstrated how to enumerate isometry classes of linear codes by using thes
