✦ Synopsis

A Change at the Helm

Beginning with the first 1993 issue of Volume 7, J. Carl Barrett will replace me a t the helm of Molecular Carcinogenesis and will join Tom Slaga as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal. My involvement in the conception, birth, and perinatal period of this journal has been enormously instructive. I have learned the nuances of issues ranging from paper grade to publicity, from politics to pestering. Sometimes this seemed beyond my capacity, training, and interests. However, the enormous generosity of scientific colleagues in donating service to science sustained my efforts even in times of frustration. The introduction of this journal was facilitated by Tom Slaga and me, by the staff of the editorial office, and by the publisher. However, the establishment of the journal can be largely attributed to the efforts and enthusiasm of the executive and associate editors, manuscript reviewers, and the many contributors to the invited and proffered features of Molecular Carcinogenesis. To these wonderful colleagues, I express my deepest appreciation.

In its inception, we envisioned that Molecular Carcinogenesis would provide a forum for our field where studies on the molecular basis of carcinogenesis would be compiled. Last year, Molecular Carcinogenesis was among the top ten most cited journals in basic cancer research. Not a bad record! Happily, my association with the journal will continue as a member of the Executive Editorial Board and as a contributor. I will miss my daily contact with Maureen Goode and Jude Richard at the editorial office. My close friendship and scientific ties with Tom assure me of continued frequent contact with him. They have been terrific coworkers. Additionally I thank Carol Kakalec, our first managing editor; Kevin Flynn, our staff editor; and Walter Pagel, the director of the Department of Scientific Publications at The University of Texas M . D. Anderson Cancer Center, for their invaluable help. Brian Crawford of Wiley-Liss has worked closely with us throughout my tenure, and I appreciate his advice, assistance, and support. I am pleased that Carl has agreed to share with Tom the responsibilities of Editor-in-Chief. His record of accomplishments in molecular carcinogenesis research, his devotion to science, and his unimpeachable integrity make him an ideal candidate for the job. I wish him great success in this endeavor.
