✦ Synopsis


A century of public health D uring the 20th century, the health and life expectancy of persons residing in the United States improved dramatically. In fact, people live approximately 30 years longer today than they did 100 years ago, and 25 of those years are attributable to advances in public health. To highlight these advances, a web site has been developed by the Center for Disease Control. The information and charts found there are based on a series of reports published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), April through December 1999.

Constant effort by a diligent and resourceful public health workforce created this century of success. But how has this success affected us, how have the leading causes of death changed, who was responsible, and what can we expect in the future? The answers to these questions can be found in this CDC report. A summary of them is given below.
