β¦ Synopsis
A 4-year-old girl, said to have suffered from a trauma to the face in early October 1966, was admitted to the hospital at the end of the month with headaches, impaired hearing and other minor neurological signs. The child had never been outside Finland. There was a firm tumour in the left maxillary region. The cervical lymph nodes were enlarged and the abdomen was swollen. As the maxillary tumour enlarged, exophthalmus developed on the left side and at orthopantomography the distance between the upper molars on the left side was increased. X-ray showed some areas of translucency in the metaphyses of the proximal long bones. A biopsy of the maxillary tumour indicated lymphoma and thus, in the absence of major alterations of the white blood picture, the case clinically resembled Burkitt's tumour. This impression was strengthened by the finding of atypical vacuolated cells in a bone-marrow smear.
