Abstract
A multi‐stage hybrid integrated ultra‐low‐power‐consumption amplifier using a low‐cost silicon bipolar junction transistor for intelligent transportation system (ITS) applications is developed at 5.8 GHz. Under a low dc‐power bias of 3.0 V and 0.92 mA, the designed amplifier shows the state‐of‐the‐art performance with a gain of 32.5 dB, NF of 4.5 dB, input and output return loss of less than −10 dB, and a corresponding −1 dB compression point of −19.6 dBm at 5.8 GHz, achieving a gain‐to‐power‐consumption ratio of 11.78 dB/mW, which is the highest ever reported at C‐band. A design approach that can simultaneously provide high‐gain, low power consumption, low noise figure, and low return loss is presented in this paper. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
