✦ Synopsis
Experimental in¨estigations of the impedance characteristics of a capaciti¨ely fed square microstrip antenna are reported. The antenna structure consists of a radiating patch and a small self-complementary patch located between the radiating patch and the ground plane. The small self-complementary patch, which excites the radiating patch through capaciti¨e coupling, is fed by a coaxial probe. This new antenna structure has a broad impedance bandwidth.

The proposed antenna is found to ha¨e a much broader impedance bandwidth as compared to the con¨entional U-slot antenna. An impedance bandwidth of about 33.8% is achie¨ed for the proposed E-plane antenna. Through the use of a washer on the proposed antenna, the probe inductor is compensated, and an
