## Abstract The Preissmann box scheme is the standard numerical method used by hydraulic engineers to model open channel flows or surcharged flows in pipes; but it breaks down for transcritical flows. Various alternatives have been suggested for such cases, but we show how simple modifications of t

Near-resonant free-surface flows over a wavy bed of either finite or semi-infinite extent are considered. For a bed of finiteextent wavy profile of a small amplitude, it is shown that the linear model is valid and a steady state exists even within the resonant regime, with an "upstream influence". I
