A recirculating He 3 refrigerator is described in which the compressed He 3 is cooled below 4.2 K by means of a heat exchanger rather than a pumped He 4 bath. This design eliminates the requirement for large capacity pumps and a separate, pumped He 4 bath. In continuous operation, a refrigeration power of 200 mW is available at 1.85 I(, using a 1501 min" I mechanical pump and an inexpensive compressor.
