Thermodynamic calculation and analysis of new type of coal moving bed gasifier with draft tube
Liu, Y. et al. Huaxue Gongcheng (Xi'an, People's Repub. China), 1998, 26, (3), 55-57. (In Chinese) A study involving thermodynamic calculation and analysis of a new type of coal moving bed gasifier with a draft tube was conducted. The thermodynamic calculation results obtained were supported by hot model experiments and a comparison with other types of coal gasifier was made. 99102390 Trace elements and coal preparation Firth, 9. and Dale, L. Coal Prep. (Gordon & Breach), 1998,19, (3-4), 297-317. The products and refuse streams from nine Australian coal preparation plants were analysed for 61 trace elements.
For each stream, the distribution of the trace elements relative to the mass distribution was determined, providing data on the potential partitioning of the elements during coal cleaning. As expected the levels of some elements were reduced by the coal preparation process as a result of their association with liberated mineral matter. The consistency of the level of removal was found to be high for some metals including titanium, vanadium and copper whilst others were highly variable especially chromium, manganese, zinc and arsenic. Eighty-seven samples of product thermal coals were analysed for the same 61 trace elements. The distributions of the trace elements in these coals were investigated and it was found that, for many of them, the frequency distribution could be described by a gamma distribution. Since the mineral matter in these coals would be expected to predominantly arise from secondary mineralization, this distribution suggests that the presence of trace elements is as a result of a probabilistic process.

In search for methods and means for preventing environmental pollution in operation of oxidizable mineral deposits
Al'mukhambetova, Sh. K. et al. Dokl. Minis?. Nauki-Akad. Nauk Reso. Kaz., 1998, (l), 69-73. (In Russian) The study presents the theoretical basis for the development of the methods and technology used to control the oxidizing processes in ore mining. This prevents environmental pollution from mining operations and storage of ores and coals, and increases the leaching efficiency of the minerals. 99102392 Organic geochemistry of solutions liberated during weathering of stock-piled lignite and bituminous coal Jehlicka, J. er al. Mineral. Mag., 1998, 62A, (Part 2). 712-713.
Leachates from lignite and bituminous coal stock piles were collected from two sites in Czech Republic and analysed to identify the organic compounds and determine their concentrations This paper presents the results, paying particular attention to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in its discussion.
