Coal liquefaction research performed in the Central Mine Institute since 1967, with emphasis on a new concept introduced in 1980, is reported. This concept was a direct, one-step, autocatalytic hydrogenation of coal-oil paste at higher temperature and higher pressure. The paper discusses the project of a 200-ton coal/day hydrogenation plant.
