โฆ Synopsis
NiMo sulfide catalysts were supported well with ultrafine hollow particles of a particular carbon black (Ketjen Black: KB). This catalyst exhibited an excellent activity for coal liquefaction and can be recovered from the liquefaction residue for recycling. The high activity is ascribed to the highly dispersed supporting of active metal species on the surface and high dispersion of the particles in the coal liquid. The hydrogenation activity of various C-supported metal sulfides catalysts were also investigated to gain insight into the influences of metals and C species on the catalytic activity. Results are presented and the relationship between the catalytic activity and species of metals and carbon supports is discussed briefly.

Over two million gallons of low solids coal water slurry to date, obtained from waste coal fines, have been co-fired with pulverized coal in a utility scale boiler in a continuous test. This sustained test burn is an essential step toward the commercialization of the technology.
