✦ Synopsis

The previous paper showed that low-temperature , premixed combustion leads to a reduction of NO x and particular matter (PM) in a fourcylinder injection diesel engine with EGR. Experimental investigations were conducted in this research to examine the effects of the intake gas temperature, excess air ratio and compression ratio on the exhaust emissions of a engine incorporating the new combustion concept. It was found that prolonging the ignition delay reduced smoke emissions under the rather heavy EGR rate. Based on this result, this paper discusses the possibility of expanding the area of the new combustion concept in small DI diesel engines.
