✦ Synopsis
Although still economically viable, existing coal plants are ageing and as units are withdrawn from service, so coal consumption will fall. If it is to compete with natural gas-fired combined cycles and effectively utilize the nation's most abundant fuel. new and improved methods of using coal will be required. Compared to current coal-fired power plants, these new designs must have lower capital costs, a lower cost of electricity, high efficiencies, and improved environmental performance. PFBC technologies can meet these requirements and when deployed they will maintain electricity prices low once natural gas prices rise.
