In the blast furnace process, coke and its substitute reductants including heavy oil, injected coal, and waste plastics, are charged as C and hydrocarbon carriers. They serve primarily to generate reducing gases containing varying amounts of CO and H. Without these reducing gases the reduction of the iron ore cannot take place.

The initial stages of the devolatilization of three United Kingdom pulverized coals have been studied in a coal-laden turbulent air jet emerging into the combustion gas environment produced by a methane-air flat flame burner. The temperature range provided by these flames was between 1670 and 1870 K
An apparatus has been developed to directly measure the unconfined yield strength and bulk density of consolidated-coal samples. This forms part of a research programme to develop a coal-handlability index that would predict the ease with which a coal would flow through a handling system. The new te
