✦ Synopsis

The 0' * isotope has been used in conjunction with a low pressure-low temperature reactor in order to more fully illustrate the mechanism of the carbon-oxygen reaction. The results of this investigation have shown: both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are primary products of the reaction, both oxygen atom8 of the carbon dioxide produced do not necessarily come from the same oxygen molecule (Wang and Fleicher (l) have stated this to be the case; however, their experimental conditions were such that the homogeneous oxidation of carbon monoxide would invalidate this conclusion as drawn from their data), carbon monoxide doe8 not react to any great extent with the surface oxide produced during the reaction, there is an equilibrium established between chemisorbed carbon dioxide and gaseous carbon dioxide, and the chemisorbed carbon dioxide can readily exchange oxygen atoms with the surface oxide.

Upon the reaction of carbon with O,, three products form: CO, CO,, and a carbonoxygen surface complex. The CO and CO, are produced through two paths: (1) via a fleeting oxygen surface intermediate and (2) via the breakdown of an oxygen surface complex. Oz1"-16 and 0,18-1" were used in this study to

## Abstract The use of kinetic isotope effects (KIEs) for the short‐lived radionuclides ^11^C and ^18^F in the study of reaction mechanisms is described using some examples. Leaving group fluorine KIEs (__k__^18^/__k__^19^) have been utilized to determine the rate‐limiting step for nucleophilic aro
