pressures between 15 and 150 torr. Gasification rates were measured using a high sensitivity microbalance. Since the average burn-off per rate determination was cu. 0.015%, all the necessary kinetic data could be obtained on one graphite sample, with a minimum amount of total burn-off. Gasification rates were shown to be unaffected by diffusional resistance. Kinetics of gasification were well described by the equation, rate=Kip(CO$/[l +K2p(CO)+K3p(CO,)]. It is concluded that the mechanism of the reaction is given by CO2 +C$ZO +C(O) and C(O)?CO, jl where Cf is a carbon free site and C(0) is an occupied site. In this mechanism, K1 =il ; k2 =jl /j3 ; and Ks=ii/ja. Values found for the rate constants are: ii =1.25 x 1O22 exp (-99,0OO/RT) cm3/mole set, ji =3.14 X 10" e xp (-74,000/H') cm3/mo le set, and j3=4.35 x 10' 3 exp (-87,000/R?') se&. These values are discussed and compared with those predicted theoretically, where possible.
