✦ Synopsis

The 7th Meeting of the European Society of Gene Therapy was held in Munich on November 26±28 1999, and was organized by Bernd Ga Ènsbacher and coworkers from the Technical University of Munich. About 600 participants convened to discuss the latest developments in viral and non-viral vector technology, gene therapy of cardiovascular, hematopoietic cell and neuromuscular disorders, cancer, genetic defects and infectious diseases. Gene therapy has been shown to be a feasible and ef®cient therapeutic strategy in numerous animal models. As the ®eld moves rapidly into clinical evaluation, translating the success of pre-clinical studies into therapeutic ef®ciency in humans is a dif®cult challenge. Years of research may be required before gene therapy becomes a reliable and ef®cient therapeutic approach with broad applicability. Nevertheless, the rapid progress of research in gene therapy and related ®elds, which was documented at this meeting in Munich, provides reason for optimism that this goal will be reached.
