were obtained that correspond to other carbon crystal forms. In addition, patterns are obtained that do not correspond to any of the known carbon allotropes.

61. Laser Raman studies on carbons

M. Nakamizo and R. Kammereck (Department of Materials Sciences, Pennsylvania State lJniversi& University Park, Pewzsylvunia). Laser Raman studies were carried out on natural graphite, pyrolytic graphite, glassy carbon, carbon black, sputtered carbon and 'white carbon* produced by a high power laser illumination. All of these carbon materials show two Raman lines at 1580 cm-' and 1355 cm-', except highly crystalline graphite which gives only the 1580 cm-' band. An additional Raman band at 2140 cm+ was detected in 'white carbon' produced from natural and pyrolytic graphite.
