(FAI), and a thermoplastic benzofulvene compound, cinnamylideneindene, (CAD, were copolymerized by heating in an autoclave. Properties of the derived polymers reflected a graduated trend from thermoplastic to thermosetting character with increasing FAI content. Properties of the derived carbons also reflect the trend from a thermoplastic to a thermosetting precursor system. 41. Unique binder systems for the fabrication of graphite F. C. Miller and M. P. Whittaker (Great Lakes Research Corporation, Eliulbethton, Tennessee). Evaluation and characterization has been conducted for a series of petroleum pitch/furan resin binders. These novel binders are liquid at room temperature and can be thermoset with hardeners typical of furfuryl alcohol based resin systems. The binders are specially formulated to yield glassy, isotropic, or anisotropic carbon structures upon graphitization.

The influence of elementary sulphur on the pyrolysis chemistry of pitch was studied by elementary analysis of the pyrolysis residues, and by the measurement of the H,S formation during the pyrolysis. The effect of sulphur on defined aromatic pitch constituents was studied by thermogravimetric analysis. It is shown that well-graphitizable carbons and increasing coke yields can be achieved, as long as the maximum possible HIS formation around 230ยฐC is not reached.

The viscosities and molecular size distributions of furfuryl alcohol resin binders are shown to have important influences on the fabrication and physical properties of graphites made from them. Increasing binder viscosity to about 2000 cp improves the physical properties of the graphite. Above this,
