The proposed target enzyme for benzoylcyclohexanedione herbicides, 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) was purified from etiolated maize seedlings with a purification factor of 105. Enzyme activity was measured by detection of carbon dioxide formed from radiolabelled substrate. The enzyme has
