✦ Synopsis

This paper presents the results of studies on the hydration of 3CaO.SiO 2 in water, CaC12, NaC1 solutions at 20oc, 0oc and -5oc based on formal kinetic method. The specific hydration periods are depicted. It is discovered that the length of induction period depends on solid reagent permeability. The acceleration period is described by the equation of supersaturated solution crystallization. CaCl 2 initiates nuclei generation mainly in intergranular space. A decline of retardation period is described by the "shrinking sphere" equation, subject to diffusion through the product layer.

The hydration behavlour of CL2A~, a component of many calcium aluminate cements, has been studied over a range of temperature using conduction calorimetry, X-ray and thermal analysis techniques. At 4oc, hydration occurs about 2 hours after mixing; hydration is slower at 20°C but at 40°C a very rapi
