38. The use of pyrolytic graphite in uncooled rocket nozzles
A. C. Parmee (Research Division, Rocket Propulsion Establishment, Aybbwy, Buckinghamshire, U.K.). Tests in rocket motors over a range of combustion conditions have shown pyrolytic graphite to be markedly superior to other forms of carbon and graphite. Two nozzle designs incorporating pyrolytic graphite in the form of a shell and disc were used to establish its limits of performance over a wide range of rocket motor conditions. The results of this work, techniques used in the manufacture and testing of the pyrolytic graphite nozzles are described. The results suggest there is a possible link between deposition conditions, which cause slight differences in structure and erosion resistance.
